Contrastate - Seven Hands seek Nine Fingers

Fin de Siecle media FDS13

From - the sadly in 2000 demised - Contrastate several albums are hard or impossible to trace down. Happily surprised I can tell you that the first ever release, which was originally released in 1989 on their own Black Rose label, can now be found in the catalogues of the better mailorders around.

The CD has four tracks. lasts a little under 40 minutes (which is normal for a vinyl release with good sound quality) and gives an incredibly beautiful picture of a band which without doubt should be at the little list of Musical Deities from that era.

The first track "As Time Began" is one where a soft, quiet metallic sound forms the base. You might call it an experimental, non-noisy version of something which wouldn't be misplaced at a Neubauten release. The track "Thirst For Knowledge" is based on spoken word and reminds me the most at some of those 'other unknown deities from that era', being Zero Kama and Psychic TV. The CD finishes with the most relaxing piece of them, "The Man Seeking Experience Enquires His Way of a Drop of Water". And not more often I find a title to incredibly well fitting to a track. It's everything except esoteric, but I just couldn't help names like Graeme Revell and O Yuki Conjugate flashing through my head. Fabulous!

But where should a band like this be placed? They deserve a pedestal for them alone; They can be mentioned in one breath with S.P.K., The Anti Group Communication and Test Dept; All influencial parts of music history.

This CD is - next to a document which should be in every collection - an absolute recommendation for fans from the old CMI sound, maybe even the era of Slaughter Tapes or people who got triggered by the beforementioned names. And that this CD was released by Fin De Siecle Media isn't that big of a surprise; That IS the label from The Protagonist.
