Noise-Maker's Fifes - Radiatio Acoustica - Live

NMF/NMT L.E.CDr promo

A promotional copy of a CD / DVD which very possibly could be released in the near future. Yes, it's still this uncertain and Gothtronic is amongst the first webzines to review it.

The Belgian Noise Maker's Fifes have been around for 15 years now and they didn't release that much material. Which is a shame because with their seperate abilities they are what the term 'synergy' is all about. In fact, before me is a CDr which is the prove of this!.

"Radiatio Acoustica" is the integral recording of a live performance NMF did on december 10th 2004 in Brussels. The four members of NMF were five for the ocassion, the extra person being Michael Prime (with whom NMF Geert Feytons also forms the project Negative Entropy).

The CD is to be listened as one long 52 minute track and it covers various styles in experimental music. A description of the whole piece would be something like "minimal experimental soundscapes with ethnic and avant-gardistic influences". And if you got lost there, it's music which you listen to more then once because you will definitly have missed layers in there which show the piece in a whole different perspective.

The range of instruments used is huge. In the 52 minutes it's about next to impossible to even think about what is used to make what sound ... The piece just has too many different moments to cover in a review.

Best moment for me personal is around the 10 to 12 minute spot where there is a part which reminds me a bit of 'How to destroy angels' by Coil. Maybe it's the gong-sounds, but it's also the empty feeling, the atmosphere which is very well given an auditive perspective.

And we're only halfway through; I also mentioned a DVD, didn't I?

Well, it holds 20 minutes of the performance and it definitly gives a much better insight on what one can expect when you book these guys. And that is an audio-visual spectacle, period. Part of the earlier described indescribable sounds seem to come from a variety of handmade instruments, as well as impressive video-footage.

The problem with an audio-setting is that a video-setting often breaks down the listener's fantasy. And in this case, it doesn't count. NMF are very well to be enjoyed by both listeners as well as viewers.

A truly very good performance waiting to be discovered by a larger audience.

The DVD also has more material of the 'Naos' installation, which gives a very good insight on what self-playing homemade instruments are capable of.

You will just have to wait until it's released officially, but Gothtronic will definitly let you know the when and where ...
