Institution D.O.L. - With her I had some tropical feelings

Steinklang Industries SKD09

This Austrian musician has 6 releases out in the last 6 years. His website has the following statement "Harsh sound and beautiful songs shall be the theme music for the construction of a tower of babel and the joy of life shall be the power of all things" which in my opinion can be translated to "You can expect anything, but rest assured it is made with lots of fun". And exactly that is the feeling I get when listening to 'With her I had some tropical feelings'.

The CD has 6 tracks which are loosely comparable by used sound and structures. Structures yes, it's close to rhythms, but the recurrent themes don't fully fit the description of a rhythm.

"The Beginning Of Love With A Chainsaw" is a nice slow oldschool industrial track with ambient layers. Ambience with a tongue in cheek approach we can hear in "Sometimes Even A Lady Becomes A Beast". It begins reminding of the first track on TAGC's 'Burning Water', ending in a minimal rhythmic theme. "I Was One Of Her Stallions" has slow dark rhythmic structures with pr0n samples and subtle mixed noise layers.

With the earlier track descriptions, one can about describe what to expect of "Who Is This Man?", the fourth track of the album. Slow, somewhat synthetic sounding structures with layers of noise and vocals. This track has additional ultra low frequency layers which add to the thickness of the sound. "With Handcuffs Our Love Story Found An End" is the longest track of the release; a little over 14 minutes. The tension builing in this track is very nice, especially for fans of ambient drones.

Finally the CD closes with "Karaoke! (We Were Amused At The Local Bar)" and the 'fun' factor as described in the concept behind Institution D.O.L. really comes forth. All those who know Mambo Kurt and appreciate his music and are as well intrigued bu earlier descriptions in this review and who don't take everything in the industrial scene all too serious ... Well, I'll leave it to that ;-)
