Various Artists - The Steinklang picture years 1995-1996

Steinklang

"The song remains the same" but a lot has changed over the last 10 years. And at the same moment, what about all the things that indeed remained the same ... Like ... MUSIC !!!

It was indeed 10 years ago - and before that time offcourse - that picture disc releases had something ... magical. Big fat slabs of vinyl, usually quite a bit heavier then normal vinyl releases. The sound quality not always what it was supposed to be due to the pressing technique but still ...

Steinklang released a booklet with four (!!!) CD's for the price of a normal double CD. So prisewise this is probably the best buy of the year for every noisehead in the world. And musically this release is also more then worth it. It is a collection of seven titles which Steinklang released in '95 and '96 as picture discs. Amongst them are Atrox, DKF, Irikarah and Rasthof Dachau. An overview of one of the sources of origin of what is now rhythmic noise and industrial.

The first CD is dedicated to Atrox and holds the 7" 'EKG' as well as the album 'Time is now'. Even though Atrox is a name that has been around for a long time he never got the same recognition as - for example - projects like Synapscape or Noisex. And that is weird, because his stuff is good. This CD is a good example of his older works. Typical Steinklang noise with pounding structures and some vocals.

The second CD is fully reserved for DKF's 'Schmerzgrenze' album and all the extra's that came with the original ultra heavy vinyl. DKF is the abbrevation for Deutsch Katholische Feindschaft or Deaktive.Kontroll.Funktion and it was (still is!) a project from Noisex' Raoul Rucka. The original 'Schmerzgrenze'-box was released in 50 copies and also contained a copy from Noisex 'Out of Order'. Musically you have to think in that direction, but more "grungy" or "edgey".

Viron and Irikarah can be found on the third CD, which is the noisiest from this release. From Viron there isn't too much to tell, just that this original 10" with 5 tracks, simply called "Roentgentopogramm 1 to 5", and a couple of tracks on samplers is all they released. The style ranges fron harsh rythms to ambient noise like stuff. Irikarah is the 2nd release on this CD and much more straightforward harsh noise. This project from Andreas Arndt is also much more known then Viron. As stated earlier, the loudest and noisiest of the foursome.

The last CD is reserved for the sounds of Rasthof Dachau as well as the Noisex side-project Andxesion. Max Presch - who is the owner of Steinklang - and M. Sägmüller together are Rasthof Dachau and the original 7" 'In der Strafkolonie' was dedicated to the disabled dutch teacher Alexander Katan, who was murdered for "scientific" reasons in WW2. Andxesion is Noisex DNA which means Noisex and friends. Andxesion had a total of two releases, of which this was the by far the most structured.

4 CD's for the price of 2 with 7 releases totalling 277 minutes which is 4,5 hour so about 5 euro or 6 dollar per hour ...

Resistance IS futile!
