K.Meizter - Dark Matters

Old Europa Cafe

Last year there were two reviews from K.Meizter published on Gothtronic. One was under his own name ('Travelling light'), the other one was 'The dull routine of existence' by his main activity Beyond Sensory Experience. And it should be said that both releases received good critics and a note above the 8 / 10 mark.

'Dark matters' is somehow very different. At least compared to the earlier K.Meizter album on Horus CyclicDaemon. The style is much more fitting to what one could expect to be released on Old Europa Cafe. Where 'Travelling light' was an excercise in avant-garde, 'Dark Matters' contains much more an dark opressive brooding ambient atmosphere over minimal layers of ritualistic rhythms.

The opening track 'The last hurrah' is an example of a good ritual track, even though it is on the short side. The ritual therefore doesn't lead into a state of trance, which happend a lot to me with for example the latest Janitor on Tesco or some of the recent works of Black Sun Productions.

'Infernal features of a dead body', the second track, is right away a great mood-setter. This because it simply fits the title very well.

And the most wonderful thing is that the CD doesn't really have any dull moment at all, though there is at the same point one less positive aspect. Because all tracks are kinda short - in between 2 and 5 minutes, with only the final track maxing out on 8 minutes - the tracks somehow depart into the background and you aren't able to really "get into the groove" (forgive me the choice of words, but you understand).

A great album, with a great sound, but if tracks were combined differently to result in longer compositions - to feed the subliminal mind - it would have been a lot better.

The limited edition (176 copies) contains an extra 3" and a poster so collectors be quick!
