Naarmann & Neiteler - Naarland

Einzeleinheit

Both Naarmann and Neiteler were complete unknown names for me as well as the Einzeleinheit label. But it turns out I've been in contact with Naarmann for some time already and his various monikers surprised me more then once already. Because Naarmann is Tobias Fisher, the man behind the Tokafi webzine as well as the man running the Ex Ovo label who released the wonderful "I, Mute Hummings" sampler last year. And next to being Naarmann, Einzeleinheit is also his label.

So i had quite high hopes when I first played this release and in no way it let me down. The five tracks all have an own style and charme to it and that is the only weird thing about the release too. It's hard to pinpoint the atmosphere and through that be able to tell you wether you should buy it or not.

So let's go through the tracks; entitled track 1 to 5. The first part is a bit 'jazzy' and has the feel of mid 90's IDM/trance through use of the pads and strings. If IJM (intelligent jazz music) doesn't exist, it does now. The CD continues and is that the 'You've got mail' tone ? Track two has some ambient layering reminding you of (very!) early Coldmeat releases like Morthound and Raison d'Etre. The track changes slowly into a dubbish IDM-like track.

Track three is where the party starts. Very good, completly fucked up rhythms, creating a nice pace and it just keeps on going. The fourth track has some sort of industrial kinda dub breaky thing feel ... (I told you it was hard to pinpoint the tracks, right?) Together with track three the shortest tracks on the album.

The CD closes with the track I'll label as "Wir haben etwas gemeinsam". Built from minimal structures with a gorgeous drive which - through the use of the chosen sounds - is a great "mindfuck".

Even after various plays you still have the feeling you are listening to something new. This CD is good, very good. Because it is something you would not expect. En that is the true meaning of "experimental" in my dictionary.
