Aube - Paris 00/Tokyo 99

Stroomstoot Records

Three tracks of the Japanese mastermind of minimal (yet extreme) noise are on this CD and, as the title already suggests, they were recorded in Paris (first 2 tracks, 22 minutes together) and Tokyo (the third track, entitled 'Suppression Disorder V99-1.0', 22 minutes by itself).

Akifumi Nakajima's music is just about always based on one sound source, loads of effects and various recording techniques. Over the 16 years he's released music it's been everything from synths to brainwaves and from fire to stone. According to the text on the cover (which was by the way designed by Peter Savelkoul who we all know from A Challenge of Honour) the source for these tracks was one voltage controlled oscillator.

For the technical noobs: A voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) is the most common element of a synthesized sound. Basically only capable of producing one sound in one basic wave-form, where only one or two variables can be changed (the pitch of the tone and depending on the wave-form a little bit of the 'timbre').

What Aube is capable of with this one sound is incredible. Especially the track 'Suppression Disorder V99-1.0' builds up real slow and intense and you can really hear the sound grow and change. The first two tracks are a bit more complex and make it obvious that we are dealing with a sound-magician.

So this album will get high circulation in my stereo, but I will personally change the order of the tracks because the build-up is a bit better that way, but that is just a musicians opinion. As it is now, the 'flow' is perfect just to listen and get an idea of what Aube is capable of.

This CD-r is packed in a DVD case and is limited to 100 copies. The second release on the new Belgian label Stroomstoot, Hypnoskull being the first. And we'll hear more of them if they keep on releasing high quality music like this Aube album.
