Isothesis - Cocoon of Red Light

Beast of Prey

Once every now and then a label releases something you wouldn't expect. The Beast of Prey label for example always seemed kinda harsh to me. Partially because of the name maybe, and/or the recent other releases I've reviewed. But Isothesis' 'Cocoon of Red Light' surprised me in a very pleasant way.

First things first: 6 euros, great packaging and fantastic soundscapes. That should be all you need to know. Order it now and be well.

Isothesis hails from France and released two demo's under the name Eternal Dunes. After that it's been quiet for two years and now he released 'Cocoon of Red Light' on the Polish Beast of Prey. Five massive ambient soundscapes with a touch of noise and even less audible ethnic and symphonic influences.

The tracks are too ambient to be called drones, but they are way too much a developing soundsculpture then the term soundscape would imply. A very nice mixture of styles and emotions, great for background listening but also if you are in need of some music to get into another reality.

The concept behind this release is a bit strange and somehow I can't seem to find the words to explain it to someone else. It all starts with a very open view - almost happy - and the further the CD goes, the more opressive the sounds and atmosphere become.

Very well done for a first release! Compliments to both the artist as well as the label.
