Architrav - Arctic Museum

Polymorph Records

Form and function. Two terms that you should always keep in mind. No matter if you're a graphics artist, a musician, a programmer, a prostitute or a designer of submarines. Form and function are equally important when it comes to useability of your product.

Before me is a double CD by Architrav, a side-project from Mnemonic who we all know from their previous releases on Alfa Matrix. But there are a lot of differences between their main activities and this ambient/IDM side-project. So much that this could never be released under the Mnemonic-moniker.

'Arctic Museum' has 11 tracks playing with the theme of ice, the arctic and a long journey from a submarine, as can also be seen from the titles they used like 'Ewiges Eis', 'Leinen Los' and 'Tauchgang'.

The label on which it is released is quite small and unknown to the larger audience, but it is a good choice for both parties. I've know Polymorph Records from their earlier released 'Omnon' by Polygon and already that first release made quite an impact on me. This Architrav is the second one I've heard and I'm almost equally impressed.

But ... It is a double CD, so what is there on the second CD? It's all remixes and in this case, these remixes don't add too much to the release as a whole. It's not that they're bad, not at all! But as is, it would have been more then enough just to release that first CD. The form of adding a remix CD adds to the value of the package, but in this case, the function (giving a remixed view on the original tracks) stays behind.

Nevertheless: Buy this thing at once !!! Keywords: L'Usine, Starfish Pool, Ab Ovo, Hecq, Kattoo ...
