Dark Water Memories - The Rejuvenation Ballet: Music For Those Across The River

War Office Propaganda / Rage in Eden

Nice projects from Hungary are scarce, so Dark Water Memories is definitly worth investigating. Discogs mentions 2 releases and the website from War Office Propaganda (or Rage in Eden) has no link. Through myspace we arrive at their website and suddenly this project from Matolcsy Kálmán turns out to have several releases alreay.

The album contains minimal compositions which are thoroughly layered with sounds that either emphasize the rhythmic structure or add a melody lines in the landscape. At times it seems the creator studied at the University of Coil, but then suddenly we recognise french influences or rhythms from Latin-America or even atmospheres from horror movies.

The experimentalism in this CD obviously shows that Dark Water Memories listen a lot and often to the English avant-garde, and in particular the before-mentioned figureheads Coil. Sadly they aren't able to reach the level with which Coil ended. In their compositions they seem to be on their way, though concerning the production there is still some territory to cover.

All in all this is a fun and relaxed CD. Sometimes avant-gardistic works are very intensive to listen to - fellow admirers will agree - but this one is smooth and accessible. Despite all the variation in the album the atmosphere remains constant.

Suddenly I notice one of the tracks is a tribute to John Balance ...
