N.Strahl.N / Metek - Drowning Devices

Cohort Records

Cohort Records might not ring a bell to many of you, but this small label run by John Gore of 'kirchenkampf' released quite some interesting stuff in the past. Several of them are splits between the known or unknown gods of noise, others are solo-releases and like this one, a true collaboration between artists.

N.Strahl.N is Mario Löhr and since 2006 he releases under this project. About as long as Metek aka Fredrik Nilsson. They both released quite some stuff, but I didn't have the peasure of hearing their output before. Which is a shame when I listen to this collaboration which got the name 'Drowning Devices' and is presented in an oversized DVD box.

The input / fieldrecordings for the tracks 'Patterns Of Fracture & Tectonic Convergence', 'Ambient 8' and 'Eiserne Reserve' were created or recorded by Metek, while the composition was finished by N.Strahl.N. This was turned around on 'Komfort' and 'Tvagning'. Somehow if you listen very carefully you can recognise this, which is weird because the compositions definitly form a whole. In the tracks where N.Strahl.N did the finishing touch the fieldrecordings are more audible in the stereo-perspective. Where Metek did the finishing touch thee are more a part of the underlaying structures of sounds and drones.

This CDr can be considered a release where 'musique concrete' and 'metal machine music' touch eachother (read: the clash from concrete and metal). The whole thing reminded me of the atmosphere from 'Armenia' by the Eindstuerzende Neubauten. And if you know me, that' a compliment.
