Laurent Pernice vs Laurent Perrier - Play Piano and Sounds

Sound on Probation

When one Laurent already rocks your world, imagine what two Laurent's do to you ... And yes, this is fully applicable to the latest release by the French Sound on Probation label, Laurent Pernice vs Laurent Perrier 'Play Piano and Sounds'.

Both Laurents have been active in the legendary French project Nox and as far as known, this is their first collaboration. Since then and the birth of this project both have been active with their own music and musical activities. We have seen Perrier's name more often in this blog and as for Pernice, he also did a lot in the meantime, but somehow his sounds never crossed my path.

'Play Piano and Sounds' is exactly what these guys do on this album. Minimal tunes and themes performed on a piano are layered on a bed of soundsculptures and laidback beat patterns. And as for the collaborations, each Laurent is tributed half of the tracks on this album. You might expect a slight incoherence between the tracks of both Laurents, but the continuous exchange of contributions make the CD sound as a whole.

So is there nothing bad to say about this release at all? Well, at moments it might be too beaty for the avant-gardist, and at the same time it might be too experimental for the beat-oriented listener. So the release as such might not be "pure" enough for listeners who suffer from narrow-mindedness or scene-restrictions, but for everybody who likes actual music, this CD is a welcome addition to be placed between the alva noto / Sakamoto collaboration and your collection of L'Usine Icl CD's.
