Merzbow - Dust of Dreams

Thisco Thisk.23

Three track which keep you occupied for a little under an hour in a cruelly distorted world; Where the 'dust of dreams' slowly suffocates you. As in a dream where on the one side a throbbing subliminal rhythm brings you in a trance, but where that same trance clears the path for mean noises and digital manipulations to invade. It's a world as written by Masami Akita: Merzbow.

Anybody who looks around in the international noise-scene will see the name Merzbow very quickly; completely to be expected and well deserved. Several discographies name above 300 releases en the legendary Merzbox (50 cd's) isn't included then.

'Aren't all those releases a lot alike?' you might wonder and the answer is 'nope'. He knows to surprise you every time, albeit with the same ingredients. Maybe not always concerning the 'sound' but definitly concerning composition and concept. The few (five) CD's I personally own are all different and "Dust of Dreams" is a welcome addition.

The first track (1339) has a pulsating rhythmic sublayer which reminds you of for example the Swedish scene (think: BDN). The 37 minute titletrack consists of different parts, but is always built from a repetitive sampled layer, with additional noise creating an epic piece. De break at 20 minutes where suddenly birdies are heard is a welcome ricochet. And just vefore the track ends the track again changes style completely. Maybe I would have expected a bit more seperate tracks where the changes are a bit more deepened. The CD ends with 0716, by far the noisiest and most furious track with loads of filters and extreme frequencies.

I didn't know a lot of releases from Thisco, but from what I've recently heard and reviewed they definitly put themselves on the map as a label with good releases and a strong catalog.
