Band of Pain - Through the past darkly (1994 - 2006)

Fin de Siecle Media fd016

Band of Pain is the project of Steve Pittis of Splintered. The recently released double CD holds an overview of his work from the last 12 years. One CD with tracks which were released on samplers and hard to get stuff, and one CD with old vinyl tracks. Both CD have extra unreleased works to make it a good release for everybody (even if you have all the other stuff already).

'Through the past darkly' is the titel of the first CD. Almost 80 minutes of music. Nice minimalistic soundscapes, subtle "soundplay", heavy drones, experimental and avant-gardistic layering in intimite atmospheres. How to call it ... Yes, maybe "intimate" is the correct word. I almost feel like an intruder listening to it. The ultimate music to play in the dark ...

As soon as someone hears 'Kooa.ibb + iluilu.m Version II' I simply can not imagine that someone being not impressed by the music of Steve Pittis. Or maybe 'Habanero High' ... Or 'Comedown 5.30 A.M.' ...

The second CD holds tracks which were released on vinyl before this. De style is just about the same as the first CD. Drones and minimal ambient with lots of effects and 'crazy sounds'; albeit guitars ('The Breakoff'), completely fucked up voices and looped samples ('Blast #1') or tracks based purely on noise ('Miranda Grey'). Personal favorite of this CD is 'Driven' - which reminds me of Troum, but much more creepier.

Of all Fin de Siecle releases I know this is definitly one of the most intriguing. And that after the fact I became a sudden Contrastate fan through all their re-releases on FdS
