Teho Teardo - Tower/Microphone

Teha Teardo is the fourth release on the still young label Finalmuzik. 'Tower / Microphone' is a very strong conceptual release, but those who are creating an ugly face now while thinking "but conceptual means inaudible" rest assured that that is not the case.

The Teho Teardo album is a gorgeous ambient album where the atmospheres keep on being intriguing even after several times of listening. Laidback repetetive patterns over droney sounds.

For recording the track "T/M" and "Fifteen minutes without ego" 24 contact microphones were placed strategically over the premesis of the ancient tower 'Ospedale dei Battuti' in San Vito al Tagliamento in Italy. The 24 channels were plugged into a mixing desk which made tower became a big microphone. And from that moment on it was tweaking, filtering, emphasizing and amplifying the generated sounds.

From what I can hear, the other three tracks (yes, the tracklist on the CD only mentions four, but there is an untitled fifth track also) were based on sounds created with guitar and rhodes. In what way these were manipulated isn't clear, because the CD information and the website contradict eachother on this. But the sound is very much the same and there is no single moment where you feel the tracks shouldn't be on the same album.

As stated earlier in the review, the result is astonishing and should appeal to fans of for example Biosphere ('Shenzhou', 'Man with a movie camera') or Coil (Equinox-series). Not musicwise, but more atmospherically. And if your collection is all about musique concrete, you will definitly have to get this one.
