Maggot Breeder - Myasis

It may not be a surprise that a lot of people (and I mean a LOT) are active in more then one musical project. Offcourse this is due to those people having different ideas or feelings about tracks which don't always fit under a certain moniker.

Maggot Breeder's Reuel Ordonez is one of these people active on several musical fronts. Next to this project he is also active in the instrumental doom/sludge trio Squalor. Though what his activities have in common is that in both the guitar is the most important source of sound.

The CD 'Myasis' has nine tracks which are from the beginning to the end getting more and more uneasy to listen to. Even with the knowledge that the middle part of the CD is the most accessible for most people.

Hmmz ... A bit cryptic isn't it? Well, it's quite simple actually.

The CD opens with 'Passchendaele', a nice and noisey guitar-piece which sort of opens your mind to the world you're about to enter. The second track 'The Rest Is Silence' is a nice soundscape with experimental influences which forms in the same vein a good introduction to the sort of music the rest of the CD consists of.

Track 3 upto 7 form the basics of 'Myasis'; A musical style which holds the middle somewhere between drones, soundscapes, ambient and 'plain' atmospheres. One is a bit more melancholic and one uses Tibetan singing bowls. Good solid music, even though it sometimes misses a little bit of tension to keep it exciting.

The final two tracks don't follow this earlier development. 'Igorot' is more rhythmic / structured through the use of loops, vocals and samples. It has a nice Arabian feel (or is that me?). Final track on the CD is the title-track. Under two minutes of high pitched electronics. Yes, they hurt ...

It's good, maybe not brilliant, but it's good nevertheless. I'ld be honestly very curious what would happen is this layering of sounds would be added to his other project ... Slugedrones ... Hmmmmm ...
