Soccer Committee - sC

Morc Records

There is only 23:28 on the counter as the last seconds of probably the most fragile music around are still reverberating through my room. The silence was broken with the new release by Soccer Committee, but a deeper silence took its place.

Mariska Baars from Leiden, Holland proves with this first pressed CD that indeed less is more. Less turns out to be a lot more. A lot ...

Upto now her tracks were only released on a 3" CD-r, a business CD-r and a self released demo with the magnificent title "De kat spint, de computer zoemt en Mariska zingt zachtjes" (tr: The cat spins, the computer buzzes and Mariske sings softly). And that is just about the exact desciption which fits the "sC" release, but sadly that title was taken already.

The songs only twice pass the 3 minute counter ('Here I go again' and 'Stripping the nude') but even for a droner and dreamer as me that is no problem. The consistency of the tracks is very good and the sincerety with which the tracks are recorded makes it easy to press play again.

I forsee a great future for Mariska if she keeps on going in this direction. Especially with the recent interest in folkish and minimal guitar music. And yes, I could think labels like Matador, City Slang or Flowershop and bands like Smog, Cat Power, Guided By Voices, Sophia or Low teaming up with her on stage ...
