Desolation Zone - l'Homme machine

Beast of Prey

The Beast of Prey label comes from Poland and in the past we've already reviewed several of there releases. Currently in the CD-player is 'l'Homme machine' (the mechanical man) by the for me until know unknown project Desolation Zone.

The man behind Desolation Zone is Krzysztof Wlodarski. Since 1994 - and let's face it, that's quite long already - he has been working on his music which he describes as an exploration of the fields between various kinds of noise (mechanical, electronic, etc) and music; The border between chaos and order as art form.

So we can safely say that this is a well considered and thought of project which does have more to say. But somehow the music - which is at moments very well done - never seems to go beyond the point of a repetitive structure, reminding you of factory and robots. Death industrial can be so much more then what is shown here. Allthough I have to admit that I've personally been spoilt with the recent re-release from Inanna, who are amongst the godfathers of death industrial.

Don't get me wrong, it's a good album and the packaging is fantastic, but with a bit more variation in the themes (or exploration of the set borders) it would have been even better. As said, the packaging deserves a special mention. Slip into the vinyl gloves, take out the scalpel and create your own 'l'Homme machine'.

With a limitation of 444 copies, worth a try if you like for example Law; a solid dark atmosphere and minimal rhythmic structures.
