My Cat is an Alien - Il Segno

Starlight Furniture Co.

My Cat is an Alien is a duo from Italy consisting of the two brothers Maurizio and Roberto Opalio. Their music is based on improvisation and they produced quite an impressive discography in the ten years of their existance. Despite their productivity, 'Il Segno' is the first album that crosses my path.

In a whole, the music on 'Il Segno' is built from minimal guitar melodies and other sounds made with - or from - guitars. Fluffs, puffs, squeeks, screeches and just about anything imaginable. Sometimes the tracks remind you of the better-known guitar experimentalists, but MCIAA is way more avant-gardistic in its nature. Additional sounds to the melodies remind you of anything other then guitars, like for example Tibetan Singing Bowls, though in time they all seem to be traceable to those few strings on a piece of wood. It only proves that these two men control their intruments really good.

On the third track suddenly a voice breaks the tension of the sonore sound of strings and during the composition drumming is added. Though here too it wouldn't surprise me is it was done with guitars. It builds and builds, but halfway the track suddenly falls back into a great ambient soundscape. The sounds of a piano and bells are added to create a really strong atmosphere and the dreams goes forth ...

For people who know and love these guys a beautiful journey of exploration, for outsiders probably a neurotic and incomprehensible torture ;-)
