Marvin Ayres - Cycle

Burning Shed

Quite recently the GT office received a package with three recent releases from Marvin Ayres, and luckily I am the one who gets to review them for you. From the "Ayres-stash", Cycle is the second album which I'm reviewing and because it's the second one, I'm getting to understand how Marvin Ayres works and creates his sounds.

The title doesn't say too much about the content (Cycle) but the subtitle says it all. "Twelve sketches for recycling piano harmonics" is all about interference and harmonic structures between sounds created / recorded with piano's. The backside of the CD cover hold the exact procedure which might be a tad bit too much for me to repeat it in a review. I'll suffice with saying that two piano's were used, some great recording and an enourmous amount of manipulation because not one moment on this whole album there is an actual piano-sound to be heard!

More important is the fact that it's my job to tell you if you'll like it, and with the mentioning that no actual piano can be heard, you can already imagine. This album is a gorgeous piece of ambient / soundscape. Maybe in origin a bit too conceptual for the average listener, but in result this is an album which will appeal to fans of Biosphere ("Shenzhou") or Templegarden's (though it must be said that Ayres' work is quite a bit lighter).
