Marvin Ayres - Scape

Burning Shed

The third and final release in the batch of Marvin Ayres material that was sent to us for review is entitled 'Scape'. Just like the previous album 'Cycle' it is packed in a minimal cardboard envelope with digital, psychedelic yet darkening atmospheric images. These images must be from the visual document which was made in parallel with half of these recordings.

The music which originally started as the project 'Clusters' - tracks 10 to 20 on this CD, simply called 'Clusters' 11 to 01 - ended up in a remake for the film 'Scape' by Pete Gomes. The first nine tracks therefore are entitled 'Scape' with each a different subtitle.

Musicwise Marvn Ayres is a manipulator of sound, mostly organic strings like cello, which he afterwards manipulates electronically. And it must be said that he does a very good job at it. Mostly not even recognisable as a stringed instrument the CD takes you to the world of "WTF is this" and "OMG how did he do that".

But there is a small side-note which has to be mentioned. As an ambient album it is just a tad bit to erratic to get you in the mood of another reality. So I chose to put it under avant-garde experimental, because Marvin Ayres is a name a lot of expermentalists should check out. The 'Clusters'-parts however hide lots of great but small ambient experiments.
