Marvin Ayres - Eccentric Deliquescence

Burning Shed

In a reasonably short amount of time we were sent a couple of releases of Marvin Ayres, all of which I had the opportunity to review. If you've read these reviews, you know I was quite delerious about them, or at least very happy. And now, just a few months later, a promotional copy of his latest work on Mandalic Records arrived and it doesn't even reach the shadow of these earlier works.

Marvin Ayres is a virtuous cellist and plays the violin probably equally good - both of which can be extensively heard on 'Eccentric Deliquescence'. Instead of the soundscapish works which were on 'Cellosphere', 'Cycle' and 'Scape', 'Eccentric Deliquescence' has a more compositional approach. And with these compositions, Mr Ayres just doesn't convince the listener.

The quality of sound and production is awesome, as is with all of his releases. But the compositions seem to strand in a mixture of traditionals (or at least the atmosphere) and the use of vocals in some of the tracks are just not "there". Best track IMHO is 'Durdy' where he mixes noise with classical instruments in a very original way.

It can be the effect of saturation I got from reviewing 4 Ayres' albums this year only, or it can be because the album is just not as good as the others. I think it's up to the listener to decide.
