The Infant Cycle & Dronaement - Split

Cohort Records

The Indiana based (Indianian? Indian?) label Cohort Records is partially known for their split releases between sometimes completely (non-) coherent, well- or unknown artists. This time the split is between The Infant Cycle and Dronaement.

The Infant Cycle is Jim de Jong from Canada. The only release I know from him is a collaboration betwee him and Orphx which was released on Hands Productions a couple of years ago. The split being the first release where the material is from Jim self, I must admit I am pleasently surprised. Three tracks just over 30 minutes total give you an insight on the wonderful sonic world, best perceived over headphones.

'Everything Is Slow Motion' has a nice repetitive structure with so many layers it will trigger you to enter a state of trance, while 'Organ Music For You' starts of as a dissonant sound to wake you up and ends with a lead-in to the world called Dronaement.

Dronaement's world - compiled by Marcus Obst - is based on fieldrecordings and additional ambient layers. It is one larger piece entitled 'This Night Has No End' for purpose of structure cut into 6 smaller parts. Sometimes the layers are more in front, sometimes the fieldrecordings are, but admit, at night we sometimes sleep, and we sometimes dream ...

Marcus describes a journey in a dream, where castles in the clouds are left by using a sunbeam as means of transport ... Which basically tells you what to expect sonicwise; The "same" trancendal state of mind which was mentioned at the part of The Infant Cycle. Proving that the choice of releasing a split with these two artists was fully deserved and well chosen.

Cohort Records is making a difference with releasing these splits, and I for one hope they will continue.
