KK Null - Gamma Ray Burster

Steinklang

On a cold november evening some six years ago, I made the trip to Antwerp, Belgium to see three bands play. A bizarre yet somehow perfectly matching combination of Hazard, Earth and KK Null. Hazard was exquisite as ever, Earth was just not my cup-of-tea that evening and I was totally amazed by what KK Null presented there.

He performed with source-sounds being recorded onto CD or MD and two Korg Kaos-pads. These are XY controlled multi-effect units, to be more precise, it's like the mousepad on your computer and when you tap, scratch, rub or manipulate it, you get any of the 60 internal effects which severely f*** up your input sound.

Like a madman KK Null worked those two pads at the same time, with sounds ranging from deep rumbling to extreme harsh frequencies ruining your ears at instance.

Hearing 'Gamma Ray Burster' made me remember this performance, especially when I used the headphones. It has an extreme stereo mix-down, it's very well produced and you constantly try to figure out what is or will be happening. It's a definite prove that KK Null is a master of noise.

And the fact that he has been active since '82, and been a member of Merzbow, and he played guitar and did vocals in Zeni Geva, and, and ... Well, he IS a master, and nothing I add to this review will emphasize it enough!
