N(5) - Bergen: Skizzen + Notizen

Consouling Sounds

Consouling Sounds hails from Belgium and why I never heard of it before, I don't know. They seem to to do some very nice things in the doom / ambient / postrock area and to open this review see it as an advice to check things out @ http://www.consouling.be/

The release before me is a vinyl by N, in this case N (5). The fifth release by Helmut Neidhardt strong conceptual project. 'Bergen: Skizzen + Notizen' contains 4 remixes from other works by N, respectivly done by Mirko Uhlig, Segment Fear Falls Burning and N himself. Sounds were taken from his 2LP 'Bergen' on Genesungswerk which by the way was mastered by Thomas Koener.

The four tracks on this vinyl are all equally great, there is no dull moment in this release. Mirko Uhlig's 'Rauschbogen' is a nice little drone with solid layering and serves as a brilliant introduction to the bit more ambient / soundscapish approach by Segment; One could say there's almost a rhythm in there.

The reverse side opens with the Fear Falls Burning RMX and for 12 minutes you hear the master at work. Gorgeously done this 'N-drone recycled'. The vinyl closes with not a Rmix but an Nmix, a live re-recording - or so it seems - from the track 'Horizont Wo' by N. And here you hear why Mirko Uhlig was also asked to do a remix, these two artists sound very much alike, and there is no shame in that.

File under: ambient, drone, guitar, excellent.
